Aside for him being the first well-known independent film maker of our generation, I don't see the appeal either. He's an entertaining speaker sometimes, but is generally thought of as a pandering sellout, at least in the comic industry. I tried watching 'Clerks' again recently and man, was it terrible.

Okay, so I just read a review of Kevin Smith's new movie and it sounds like a thousand dogs shitting on a thousand pre-existing pieces of dog shit. But in all honesty, what do you think his appeal is?

I chalk it up to the nerd fantasy, i.e. he writes nerds like they're witty bastards and he writes women like they're secretly just male nerds underneath it all. I tend to find that his fans defend him by essentially buying into his faux intellectualism ("DOGMA's actually a really deep movie..."), but deep down inside they wouldn't like if Lars Von Trier delivered those same messages about religion and relationships, they like it because the nerds got the hot girl at the end.

Incidentally, I think his best film, RED STATE, is pretty watchable and it's mainly because all that nerd hero bullshit is actually put aside for once. It actually feels like a first film, which is a bit of a knock I guess but it's also a little refreshing because it didn't deliver what I expected.

He was not Scotty when it came to fighting, that's for sure. He did finally get ocular implants in First Contact, but before that he would suck in a fight. He could beat up most girls and children, but ALF could probably kick his ass.

Actual girls, yes, but I think most adult women would also think to go for the eyes. Again, just watch the Armus episode, he withers like a dying flower as soon as he can't see.

This is an amazing video encapsulating the Depeche Mode classic.

Bob and another one of my coworkers have filled the long, boring hours on some of our gigs recently with a game called "Who Could Geordi La Forge Beat?" It seems they were reminiscing about the Armus episode of the Next Generation and it became obvious that with the mere removal of his visor, he's basically useless in combat. The game is quite addictive and of course many others (including myself) have joined in at this point.

So far we've determined that he could beat most sitcom children, Elmo, Dr. Smith from Lost in Space (although Bob was not convinced of that one entirely), but otherwise we've had a hard time finding fictional characters that Geordi could defeat. Leaving out any other significantly handicapped characters (i.e. paralyzed or blind people who have no powers or enhancements), who do you think Geordi could beat?

I used to draw like Rob Liefield in high school. luckily I grew out of it.

Maybe he was just really fast and charismatic? Or the devil. He sold his sol to the devil for a magic ink pen.

Man another one gone. RIP to the ultimate funkmaster. EWF also wrote some super chill soft rock songs. I heard this one more than once in the dentist office.
